VICTORIAN COMMUNITY HISTORY AWARDS NOMINATIONS OPEN

The Nationals Member for Eastern Region, PETER HALL  is urging all local historians to consider entering for the Victorian Community History Awards for 2009.

“Many people are doing all sorts of interesting work in recording their community history, whether it’s about the Mornington Peninsula or right throughout Gippsland,” Mr Hall said.

“The Victorian Community History Awards are a way by which the work of these people is acknowledged and encouraged, not least through the prizes available.  Knowing more about our community’s past is important and helps us all develop a greater sense of where we live.”

There are six categories in the awards, with a $1000 prize for each of the category finalists.   The first prize is $5,000.

The categories include:

·          best collaborative/community work;
·          best print/publication;
·          best audio-visual/ multimedia;
·          best exhibit/display;
·          best walk/tour;
·          best community research/register/records

“These awards acknowledge that there are a variety of formats in which history can be presented, and aim to promote excellence in whichever format is chosen,” Mr Hall said.

He added that entries close on February 27th, 2009.

“It is important to preserve our history for the future and these awards will help in keeping our past for generations to come,” Mr Hall said.
